I am eking out more bread paintings. I just have to do it. I wanted to create this body of work and see if I had the discipline to stick with an artistic inquiry suspended over days and weeks. I like the notion of a daily, repetitive act, of painting the same subject or type of subject in a series. I wondered what I could learn.

It occurs to me painting these little guys is a little like surveying and exploring small planets. I have to take note of and register each small crater, crack, and bubble.
I have painted eleven of these paintings and I thought it would get easier the more I completed. I was wrong, however. Each painting poses its own unique demands of coloring, shading, or texture. Some I can finish in two or three hours and some require me to return to them again and again over two to three days.
It’s not too much to say it has been humbling.
